Ageing Plan for SA
South Australia has the greatest proportion of people aged over 65 years in Australia. This is expected to increase over time. The ageing of our population is an opportunity for South Australia to be a leader in policy making and tackle real issues for older people, while benefiting the whole community. OFTA has recently developed Improving with Age: Our Ageing Plan for South Australia.
The Ageing Plan recognises that the issues of old age must not be marginalised but be an integral part of all our policies and programs to build upon our vibrant and prosperous state. As well, the Ageing Plan acknowledges the imporant and vital role older South Australians make to our state through their continuing contributions to society.
The development of the Ageing Plan is the outcome of broad consultation with key stake holders. It provides a sound foundation from which to continue in the areas of addressing the needs of the ageing population in South Australia. The Plan includes over $2 million worth of initiatives outlined in five priority areas to kick start the implementation of the plan and include:
- enabling choice and independence
- valuing and recognising contribution
- providing safety, security and protection
- delivering the right services and the right information
- staying in front
‘If we are to sustain South Australia’s success for the longer term, governments, business, the community sector and individuals must listen to the voices of our changing population and continue finding new ways to foster choice, independence and opportunity for all our citizens.’ (Ageing Plan – Foreword)
